Okay….so we have all experienced this scenario………..it’s Monday the 3 rd April and John our Factory Manager comes into your office with his resignation….he has decided to relocate to Australia to be with his children.
Now what………..Where do we start looking for the perfect employee in South Africa?
1. Advertise
Write an advert with a brief description of what you are looking for in order to attract the right candidate. This means including where you are situated, what industry you are in, what experience the position requires and anything else you feel is important to the position.
In our experience of the South African market, the best portals to advertise on include:
- Gumtree – Free
- Facebook job portals specific to your area – Free
- IOL (Independent online) R500 per advert
- Biz Community – R500 per advert
2. Industry Related Associations
Be sure to make use of any form of networking that you possibly can. For example, if you are looking for a Graphic Designer, it would be a good idea to contact VEGA, the Design Brand Business School, as they may be able to send an advert to their database of past students, post something on their FB page or even add it to their newsletter.
3. LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a wonderful portal to search for people, focusing on business more than it does social media, the profiles you find are very similar to a CV. However, you would need to build up your own LinkedIn contacts in order to give you a larger database to search from.
4. Head Hunt
This is a great way of targeting individuals, however, I would recommend using a third party such as a recruiter as the candidate feels less intimidated and also doesn’t give you a bad reputation in your industry for poaching staff.
5. Referrals
Ask for referrals from colleagues, clients, friends, because you never know who knows the perfect candidate and simply didn’t know that you were on the hunt for a new employee.
