Shona Kelland, our founder and chief-in-charge, came from a people-centred background. Shona worked for several years at Thomas International where she helped companies and employees improve organisational performance through behavioural testing. Because of her keen understanding of people and almost prescient ability to suss out company culture fit, Shona’s next logical step was entering recruitment.
Taking the plunge
Shona left the corporate world to launch an entrepreneurial venture – and so RMS Staffing was started in 2006 from a small office in Westville. Her motivation behind starting the business was sparked when she saw the need for a recruitment company that looked at the bigger picture when it came to behavior and cultural requirements in recruitment. Shona’s expertise is in collaborating with companies with the goal of building a cohesive workforce. She started working across a wide variety of industries building teams geared for progress, and after a few years of achieving excellent results, many of these companies started using RMS’s services nationally. This led to an era of Skype and in-airport interviews.
Over the past 12 years of RMS’s existence Shona has been recruiting for some of the top dogs in the country, including one of South Africa’s top insurance companies as well as a major manufacturing firm. RMS also built the entire team at a thriving local ad agency.
Branching out
The next natural step was to branch out. After working closely with Christel Louis for several years, Shona knew that Christel was one of those people who just ‘gets it’. They are on the same wavelength and share the same business ethics. With the major developments happening along the North Coast of KZN and business and tourism booming in the area, it was clearly the right environment.
